Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission from the retailer or the software company. You pay the same price either way.

The short version

• Affiliate links never change a score, a verdict or the order of a list.
• You pay the same price whether you use our link or not.
• We tell you when a link is an affiliate link, on the page where it appears.
• We write about products we would recommend without a commission. When we cannot recommend something, we say so even if there is money in it.

How to tell which links are affiliate links

Affiliate links on this site are marked in the page source withrel="sponsored nofollow", as search engines require. In the text, they appear in the same style as any other outbound link, because styling them differently would make the recommendation harder to read rather than clearer. Where an article contains affiliate links, a disclosure line appears at the top of that article as well as in this site-wide policy.

What we earn and from whom

We participate in affiliate programmes run by manufacturers, retailers and software companies, usually through an affiliate network that handles tracking and payment. The programmes we are currently enrolled in are listed at the bottom of this page and kept up to date.

Commission rates vary by programme and product. They are not a factor in whether a product appears on this site, in what position it appears, or in what score it receives. A product with a 1% commission and a product with a 30% commission are judged by the same method described on our about and method page.

What we do not do

• We do not accept payment for a positive verdict, a score, or a place in a list.
• We do not publish copy written by a manufacturer or an affiliate manager.
• We do not remove or soften a documented flaw because a commission is available.
• We do not run affiliate links to a product we have told you not to buy.
• We do not use cookies or tracking beyond what the affiliate network itself sets on click.

Cookies and tracking

Clicking an affiliate link sets a cookie from the retailer or the affiliate network, not from us. That cookie tells the merchant which site sent you, so the commission can be attributed. It does not give us your name, your payment details or your order history. See ourprivacy policy for what this site itself collects, which is deliberately very little.

Why we are telling you this

Because it is required, and because a recommendation you cannot audit is worth less than one you can. If you would rather not use an affiliate link, search the product name directly and buy it that way. Our verdicts are written to be useful either way.

Status: no affiliate programme is active on this site at the time of this update. When the first one goes live, it will be listed here with the date it started, and the relevant articles will carry a disclosure line at the top. This page is published in advance so that the policy exists before any link does.
